The Ruby Griffith Awards
The Award Ceremony for the 2005-2006 Ruby Griffith Awards was held on Sunday afternoon at the lovely Brenton Woods Country Club in Potomac Maryland. The organizers of this event planned everything carefully from the registration process to the menu. It was a pleasure to attend.Sandy Spring Theatre Group entered "Quilters" in the musical category.Introductory remarks were made by John Nicol and Susan Frampton of the Embassy Players. Then Brad Watkins, Producing Director of the Olney Theatre Center, gave a keynote address extolling the passion and joy of theatre. He said that in both professional and community theatre the gifts of our time, heart and commitment create a living breathing experience that is transformative for us as well as for our audience and that this is a noble gift we give each other.The award presentation was brief. Congratulations to all of the winners in this highly competitive season, these are the results:The award for All Around Excellence was presented to Port City Playhouse for their production of "Hauptmann".The award for Outstanding Achievement in the play category was presented to Silver Spring Stage for their production of "Coyote on a Fence". First runner up went to Providence Players for "The Women". And second runner up went to The Elden Street Players for "The Invention of Love".The award for Outstanding Achievement in the musical category was presented to Colonial Players of Annapolis for their production of "Enter the Guardsman". First runner up went to The Little Theatre of Alexandria for "The Who's Tommy". And second runner up went to The Victorian Lyric Opera Company for "The Gypsy Baron".
